Prepare the information before the goods arrive
A customs entry relies on accurate commercial information. For a typical Great Britain import, prepare the invoice, packing list, transport reference, importer details and appropriate EORI, commodity classification, origin and valuation information. Goods may also need licences or certificates. ASL checks the requirements for the shipment and the agreed representation before submitting a declaration.
Commodity codes, origin and duty are different questions
The commodity code describes the goods for tariff purposes. Origin identifies where the goods originate under the applicable rules and is not necessarily the country they were shipped from. The customs value and any applicable relief or preference affect the calculation. A supplier description alone may be insufficient for classification: composition, use and technical specifications can be needed. Current rates and controls should be checked in the UK Trade Tariff.
Customs release and cargo release
Customs clearance does not by itself mean that goods are ready for collection. Shipping-line or airline release, terminal or handling charges, document requirements and delivery bookings can also be outstanding. ASL coordinates the clearance and transport plan so those separate steps are visible. Northern Ireland movements and specialist procedures require their own checks rather than assuming the same process applies everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Can ASL clear goods booked with another forwarder?
Contact ASL with the transport details, arrival gateway and commercial documents. We can assess whether clearance can be arranged separately and confirm the scope and fees.
Do importers into Great Britain need an EORI?
A GB EORI is generally needed for commercial imports into England, Wales or Scotland. The correct number and any exceptions should be checked for the trader and movement.
Does customs clearance include duty and VAT?
The declaration service and taxes are separate. The quotation should explain clearance fees and how applicable duty and import VAT will be accounted for; the amount depends on the goods and procedure.
