Shipping from China to the UK

Plan the complete shipment from your Chinese supplier to your UK delivery address.

ASL Worldwide arranges shipping from China to the UK for importers moving containerised goods, urgent air cargo and specialist machinery. The right solution starts with the cargo, supplier location, readiness date and delivery requirements, rather than an ocean rate in isolation.

We coordinate the agreed movement with the overseas agent, carrier, customs team and UK transport provider. That can include supplier collection, export handling, freight, UK clearance and final delivery. Tell us which parts your supplier already controls so the quotation reflects the actual handover.

For a useful comparison, send the supplier's Incoterm and named place, packed dimensions and weights, commodity, cargo value, collection address and UK delivery postcode. If the goods are machinery, batteries or another regulated commodity, include the relevant technical and handling details before a service is selected.

FCL, LCL or air freight from China

FCL gives your goods a dedicated container and can suit larger volumes or shipments where shared handling is undesirable. LCL combines smaller consignments and normally includes consolidation and destination handling, so compare those charges as well as the freight rate. Air freight can suit an urgent component or high-value stock, with pricing affected by actual and volumetric weight. Oversized machinery may require open tops, flat racks, RoRo, breakbulk or charter options. ASL compares the modes against the complete shipment requirements.

EXW, FCA, FOB and CIF: establish the handover

Supplier-controlled CIF freight and a forwarder-controlled movement can have different scopes and destination charges. Confirm the named place, who arranges collection and export handling, and what the UK importer must pay after arrival. FOB is widely used in commercial discussions, but FCA may fit container cargo handed over at a terminal more appropriately. Avoid comparing an airport-to-airport or port-to-port price with a door-to-door quotation. The transport scope, costs and risks need to be understood separately.

Choosing the Chinese origin and UK gateway

The factory address affects the origin transport and available export gateways. ASL can assess options through major Chinese ports including Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Xiamen and Tianjin. UK gateways can include Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway and Liverpool, depending on the carrier option and onward delivery plan. A lower ocean rate can be offset by higher inland transport or less suitable delivery arrangements. Compare the complete delivered movement before choosing a port.

What the shipping quotation should explain

Ask which origin handling, freight surcharges, destination handling, customs fees and UK delivery charges are included. Confirm currency, validity, equipment, free-time terms and any chargeable waiting or storage. Duty and import VAT are separate from the transport price. Cargo insurance should also be discussed separately from carrier liability. ASL can explain the quoted scope and identify the shipment information still needed before booking.

Customs documents and product requirements

Prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, transport details and importer information in advance. For commercial imports into Great Britain, check the appropriate GB EORI and commodity classification, together with valuation, origin and any controls or additional duties applying to the goods. Product requirements are specific to the commodity and destination market. A freight booking or customs release does not establish that a product is compliant for sale.

Use the current GOV.UK importing checklist and UK Trade Tariff alongside the shipment's commercial documents.

Schedules, supplier readiness and final delivery

A sailing or flight estimate covers only the stated leg. Collection, export formalities, connections, UK release and final delivery add time to the complete movement. Confirm the supplier's actual readiness date and plan around holiday closures and booking cut-offs. ASL checks the current routing rather than publishing a fixed China-to-UK transit promise. At destination, align customs and carrier release with haulage, unloading capacity and the receiver's booking slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does shipping from China to the UK cost?

The mode, volume, weight, origin, delivery address, Incoterm and cargo requirements determine the cost. Send those details for a scoped quotation; a headline ocean rate alone does not establish the delivered cost.

Should I choose FCL or LCL?

Compare total transport and handling charges against your cargo volume, packing and delivery needs. There is no universal volume threshold that makes one option cheapest for every shipment.

Can ASL collect from my supplier in China?

Yes. ASL can assess supplier collection and export handling as part of the agreed movement. Provide the factory address, Incoterm, readiness date and loading facilities.

Can you ship oversized machinery from China?

ASL can assess open tops, flat racks, RoRo, breakbulk and charter options. Packed dimensions, gross weight, lifting points, photographs and unloading arrangements are needed before equipment and routing can be confirmed.

Does CIF include delivery to my UK warehouse?

Do not assume it does. Confirm the named destination port and the supplier's freight scope, then establish the UK handling, clearance, transport and other charges payable by the importer.
